Judges Critique Dogs

I was thrilled to be asked to judge Dogs at the ISBC 49th Breed Championship show, held with The National Dog Show at Stafford Show Ground, having been involved
in the breed for some 40 plus years I consider it to be a great honour and privilege.

Thanks to the hard working Committee for your hospitality and hard work, my congratulations to your team.

I really enjoyed my judging, the depth of quality, the presentation and muscle condition was very high, well done to the exhibitors. The ring was spacious and the weather was sunny and warm – there is nothing quite like the sun on an Irish Setter’s coat !

Minor Puppy Dog (3)

1st Sturrock , Sturrock & Sturrock’s Forfarian Dusty Bottoms, 7 month old who just loves life!! What a little cracker, he has a lot of maturing to do but he has a lovely head with well set on ears of good length, beautiful almond shaped dark eye giving such a cheeky look. Excellent outline on the stack, strong quarters and the best of feet. On the move he really enjoyed himself, his footfall was accurate and his tail carriage is excellent. In the challenge for Best Puppy he was just a touch over exuberant,

2nd Greenan & Hopewell’s Lochlorien No Offence Juleset. Pleasing head with a soft expression. Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder and corresponding length of upper arm. Good length of leg and correct depth of chest. Good length and spring of ribcage. Strong hindquarters. Moved soundly.

Judges Critique Bitches

First of all a sincere thank you to the committee of the ISBC for working so hard to put this show on in such difficult times. I know all who attended appreciated the work that had gone into it.

Thank you too to the committee of The Birmingham National Show. It truly was a fantastic achievement to put the show on and support the breed clubs in the way that they did. I thought the layout, atmosphere and hospitality were superb.

The stewards who worked in the ring with me did an excellent job keeping the show running smoothly, thank you.

Most of all thank you to all exhibitors for allowing me to judge your beautiful bitches and the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted.

The last time I judged the breed was over 3 years ago . I reported then on light round eyes and I am sad to see them still in evidence as were some heavy heads with broad skulls.

Some classes were very strong in quality though and I was spoiled for choice with beautiful girls down the line or cardless .

Minor Puppy ( 6: 2 ab)

  1. Atkin’s Lochlorien Marcella , 6 months old, showing great promise for the future. I loved the elegance and balance of this puppy. She has a beautiful head and expression, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders and a gently sloping topline. Well handled and steady on the move.

  2. Corless’s Swiftlark Illustrious, I see she is half sister to the winner and was close up. I preferred the head of 1 but she too has a nice head and soft expression. Good angulations front and rear. Ribs well sprung and strong hindquarters. Less settled on the move than 1 today
